University of Oulu is the Finnish Lead Partner in this Interreg IV A Nord Program project, coordinated by the Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. The activities in the work package “NIMO Service pilot 3D Internet” will be managed by the MediaTeam Oulu.

The objective is to design and implement an open standard 3D virtual model of downtown Oulu including outdoor modeling of a limited number of city blocks and indoor modeling of selected key buildings. In addition, a pervasive game utilizing the emerging 3D virtual model will be created. The game is intended for youth and it will build on the local pervasive computing resources such as the UBI-hotspots and the panOULU WLAN network.

Virtual worlds, accessible via open APIs, transgress the boundaries between physical and virtual worlds, so that interaction events taking place in the physical world can be projected in real-time into the virtual world and vice versa.

The emerging virtual model provides new innovative ways for combining the real world urban space and the game world. Embodiment and participation can be distributed with an application across physical and virtual spaces seamlessly.
