Go

Also knowns as Igo on Japan, Wei-qi on China or Baduk on Korea.

It's a board game played on a grid of black lines using black and white stones.

The aim is to surround more territory than the opponent.

Has simple rules but take years to learn how to play well.

Facts

Go is the oldest game in the world still played in its original form.

Some estimates are as high as 4000 years, but certainly 2500-3000.

Second most played game in the world, behind Chinese Chess.

It is believed there are more possible game variations than atoms in the visible universe.

Rules

Played by two players (Black and White). The board is a grid of 19x19 lines. Usual board sizes for beginners: 9x9 and 13x13. Each line intersection is called a point. Players take alternate turns, Black always starts. The player having the turn puts one of his own stones on an empty point. Instead of playing a stone,a player may pass.

Rules

If a player surrounds the opponent's stone or stones completely, he captures those stones and removes them from the board.
Ko rule: One may not play a move which repeats a previous board position.

End Game Rule

When neither player wants to keep putting stones, they will each pass. The player who controls more points wins the game.

  • There are two scoring systems:
  • Chinese: Counts territory and stones on the board.
  • Japanese: Count territory and captured stones.
