Agenda

Public Social Systems - state of play Lightning tour of Surevine Solutions In-depth look at four examples

Public Social Systems

Visual Social Media

  • Photo blogging but with a slant towards 'pinning' stuff you like. Almost like social bookmarking.

  • Blogging platform, originally inetnded for photo blogging - like Twitter for images
  • Now handles many content types including text and audio blogs
  • And they're very popular - Pinterest and tumblr are the fastest growing social networks

  • Photo sharing with your friends.

  • 30 second looping video micro-blogging
  • Created through a mobile app - so only published from mobile
  • But they are shared via twitter so can be consumed from any platform

Snapchat

  • Photo sharing, but with automatic expiry for privacy
  • Only two years old but already handling nearly half a billion message per day
  • Recently turned down a $3bn cash buyout offer from Facebook
  • Very popular with teens who want to share sensitive images but ensure they're only viewed once

YouTube

  • Most popular video sharing site and usage still increasing
  • Users can follow other users and companies on YouTube 'Channels'
  • However, recently implemented forced Google+ authentication making anonymous comments more difficult. This hasn't been very well received and may well send user to other video sites such as:

Vimeo

  • Video sharing, but with an eye to higher quality, better produced videos

Why?

"A picture tells a thousand words"

  • Much quicker to take a picture of what you're doing and share it with friends than to write about it.

Mobile

  • Better, cheaper mobile technology
  • Increased smartphone user base
  • 75% of active Twitter users are on mobile
  • Tablets and mobiles are replacing many of the uses of traditional computing
  • Mobile technology is now very cheap
  • More people have smartphones

Facebook

  • Most popular social platform
  • Key to success is the ecosystem
  • Teen usage is dropping
  • Teen usage dropping because of intrusive advertising (especially on mobile), also privacy concerns.
  • Facebook still dominates the social platforms in terms of active user numbers

Google+

  • 52% of internet users have accounts
  • However, less than half of these are active users
  • Almost everyone who uses Google services will have a Google+ account, even if they don't know it!
  • Facebook: 68% of total internet users have accounts, and most of these are active

Document Sharing

Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, Microsoft SkyDrive

  • Storing and sharing files is simple
  • Rich interfaces onto your content
  • There are a multitude of free and cheap services available
  • They make uploading really simple: Desktop sync, rich html5 interfaces, etc.
  • They make sharing really simple
  • They provide rich interfaces: photo/video galleries, online editing, etc.
