UX... IDK?

it's complicated

Many philosophies, many people

Theories VS Practice

  • Everyone has an opinion
  • Everyone has stats
  • Everyone is right

But We'll focus on 4 proven, practical design principles for a better user experience in your stuff

GOAL!

user experience design IS goal oriented design....design to meet the users goals and expectations.period.

Four "Legs" of Usable Designs

yes, I do know that there are 3 legged chairs... still seems dangerous Standard and Consistent Keep Them In Control Give Feedback Be Efficient

Standard and Consistent

  • Standard elements
  • Consistent placement and layout
  • Behaviors should be consistentdifferent visual treatments per behavior
  • But... don't do what everyone else does

Keep them in Control

  • One Primary action
  • Make stuff discoverable and fun
  • Direct manipulation of contentinline vs select

Give Feedback

  • Highlights, color, underlines, shadows, etc…
  • Successes, warnings and Errors
  • Instant!
  • Be Positive

Be Efficient

  • UX is about efficiency"accomplishment of or ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort"
  • Natural steps
  • Maintain visual hierarchy
  • Organize!

That's It
