How to Entertain a Juggler
by Jono
These notes will be hidden in your presentation, but you can see them if you open the speaker notes window (hit 's' on your keyboard).
When you hear of a juggler, you probably think of this guy. This guy is cool, but there's more to juggling.
what who where why how
To illustrate some of the different types of juggling, let look at ....
what?
Different things you can juggle

lets step back. juggling started a long time ago... 2000BC?
rec.juggling
newsgroup started in 1991. people wanted to share juggling patterns.
State transition diagrams
many juggling notations were tried. some were more effective then others
Causal diagram
(3 ball cascade)
take 3 different colored balls and walk forward. take a time lapse from the ceiling.
Siteswap notation
3
the same pattern can be compressed into a simple series of numbers
"Siteswaps" idea
use numbers to record only the orderthe balls are thrown and caught
show cascade, reverse cascade, mills mess
Vanilla siteswaps
- two hands
- alternate throws from each hand
- only one ball in a hand at a time
show that multiplexes and simuls dont count
- 1 = pass [between hands]
- 2 = hold [one hand/no toss]
- 3 = (3-ball) cascade toss [between hands]
- 4 = (4-ball) fountain toss [into same hand]
- 5 = high toss [between hands]

= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 4 balls= 5 balls
Make your own siteswaps
its fun!

Property
odd number of steps = symetrical pattern
Theorem
number of balls in the pattern = average of the throws
pattern
average
ball count

3 / 1(4 + 4 + 1) / 3(4 + 4 + 1 + 3) / 4(5 + 1) / 2(5 + 3 + 1) / 3(5 + 3) / 25 / 1
= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 3 balls= 4 balls= 5 balls
Is 631 a siteswap?(6 + 3 + 1) / 3 = 3.3333333 balls
Nope
Chocolate siteswaps?
- synchronous
- multiplexes
- composites
- orbits
- generations
- orientations
- adding hands
those are the basics, but that is only the begining.

First there was "every others"
Siteswap notation: <3p333:3p333>
show joepass pattern.
explain "every others" name.
this is the default patern that people do when they juggle together. 100% of passers know how to do it.
any ideas how this can be made more interesting?
