Volunteer Guidebook
-
Commitment to judgment free environment - this is the foundation of our organization
-
Avoid use of jargon - there’s nothing that alienates a beginner more than speaking to them in terms they don’t understand
-
Don’t steal the keyboard - When someone asks you for help, walk them through the issue - don’t grab their equipment and do it for them
-
Don’t interrupt the teacher - interjecting your own opinion in the middle of a lecture can be very disruptive and disengaging, wait for a break or question time (or another more appropriate moment)

Event Planning
or How We Decide The Event Lineup
- We do our best to schedule the right events at the best time for our community's needs.
-
~2 paid workshops per month. ~2 free presentation or panel events per month. These #s are changing.
- Chapter Leaders re-evaluate community needs and set a rough schedule every 6 months.Including ideal dates, locations, formats, topics, and even speakers.
- We try to confirm each event's location and speaker as early as 3 months in advance.
Trello Event Planning
Every event has a card, prepopulated with checklists for all aspects of eventplanning, broken up on a timeline leading up to the event date.Trello Event Planner
What to Expect During Planning
- ~2 Hours of effort per week per event
- Special cases...
- Lots of questions, from lots of sources
What To Expect During Class
- More questions.
- Space limitations, noise, weather issues.
-
Tech limitations - Wifi, projector, laptop.
-
Unique issues with student technology - laptops, OSs, & software.
-
Varying levels of understanding, education, and learning styles.
Setting the Tone
- What is an inclusive, accessible environment to you?
- What makes you feel welcome, not welcome?
- How can you make the experience fun and memorable?
We Need You!
