Pedestrian Analytics

with GeoMetri

Christopher Fricke | @bmoregeo

Good Morning Everyone! I am Christopher from GISi Indoors and I work on a platform called GeoMetri.

First Prototype

GeoMetri started as a prototype at the Esri User conference in 2013. We built a bare bones indoor navigation app to direct people around the conference. We also incorporated cutting edge technology for indoor positioning. Indoor positioning is like GPS for inside buildings. We got a lot of momentum out of the UC and started a small statup within GISi to investigate this further.

Sensor Technologies

Enter GeoMetri. GeoMetri is a platform for indoor analytics, navigation, and asset tracking. Indoor Positioning is still very immature and volatile market. Our aim is to abstract out all of the sensor technologies into a simple positioning API for our clients. All of our products use this API for analyzing pedestrian movements, assets, and providing locations for navigation apps.

Indoor Positioning

Magnetic Fingerprint of magnetic field variations used to estimate position. Wi-Fi Fingerprint or triangulation of devices relative to known AP locations. Bluetooth Fingerprint of BLE beacon transmissions or proximity estimation relative to signal strength. Dead Reckoning Sensor Fusion - Direction, speed, vector, elevation. Utilizes on-device sensors. Light Light modulating at specific intervals to create location waypoints (not visible to human eye). Sound High frequency audio inaudible to human ear. We support a variety of sensor technologies. From Indoor Atlas (magnetic) to Cisco CMX (wifi) to Navizon (wifi) to Solana (bluetooth), we aim to incorporate as many sensor and positioning technologies into our stack. Thus when it comes time for a project, we can provide honest feedback as to which technology will work best in a given scenario.
The end result for our navigation App is a simple Blue Dot. This may not look like much, but it is hours and hours of research and development between ourselves and our partners.
We can also start to analyze pedestrian analytics in our dashboard. This site uses anonymous data collection using wifi to track how people move through a space. This information is incredibly useful to our partners. One of our partners uses this technology to determine which car displays increase visits at car shows. They are also able to run more advanced statistics on how long people stay at a car and how often they revisitt the same car throughout the car show. In addition, our partners are using this technology in the air ports to figure out the length of the security checkpoint. This information is will soon be fed back into our navigation app to give better directions.
We are also working on an asset tracking mechanism for our API. Shrinkage is a big problem with hospitals and warehouses. We are working with our partners to develop cheap tracking sensors that attach to devices or people.
